2013 Breeders Cup Filly And Mare Turf

2013 Breeders Cup Filly And Mare Turf Pre-entries

2. Laughing (IRE)*
3. The Fugue (GB)
4. Tiz Flirtatious
5. Alterite (FR)
6. Emollient
7. Kitten's Dumplings
8. Lady Of Shamrock
9. Marketing Mix
10. Qushchi (GB)
11. Vionnet
12. Romantica (GB)

*= Denotes Breeders Cup Challenge winner

The Fugue (GB) has first preference in the Turf

The Contenders

Dank (GB): very nice win in the Beverly D Stakes at Arlington last out is definitely one to look out for in here, unfortunately I expect she will be at a short price. The Beverly D was also her first start on US soil and showed she definitely likes firm going and she will get firm going at Santa Anita which will definitely enhance her chances.

Laughing(IRE): four starts and four wins this year for Laughing, she has racked up a very impressive roster of wins. She took down the grade three Eatontown Handicap at Monmouth in June then took down the grade one Diana Stakes at Saratoga before winning the grade two Ballston Spa Handicap also at Saratoga. In her last out she took down her second grade one win of the season in the grade one Flower Bowl Stakes at Belmont Park. She is probably the best hand the Americans have to defeat the Europeans in here and will probably be your post time favorite if The Fugue doesn't run here.

Tiz Flirtatious: has always been right there and will be really hard to beat in here the distance suits her and already proved she loves Santa Anita. She rolled home to win the Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita last out and will be very hard to beat in here.

Alterite(FR): ran a credible second in the grade one QE II Challenge Cup last out to Kitten's Dumplings. Since moving to the barn of Chad Brown the filly has sported a win in the grade one Garden City and the second in the QE II Challenge Cup, would need to step it up a little bit to compete well here but don't be surprised if she manages to run third or fourth.

Emollient: this very versatile filly has sported wins on dirt turf and synthetic she showed a new demension last out in winning the grade one Spinster. She showed that she has learned how to rate kindly and can now beat you from anywhere on the racetrack she will be really difficult in here. Only problem is she either wins or you can't find her so in my opinion though one definitely one to look out for she is a bet against.

Kitten's Dumplings: this one has been really tough all year and has managed to always be right there at the end. I like how she seems to keep progressing and will only get better as she gets older being by Kitten's Joy.

Lady Of Shamrock: this poor filly never seems to get the pace she needs though when she does get the pace she is unbeatable. There doesn't seem to be much speed in here so, I feel she might be a bet against, but I wouldn't be surprised if she lights up the tote at a price.

Marketing Mix: one of the best older grass mares the US has to offer ran a tough second in the Rodeo Drive last out. I feel that she definitely has a huge shot in here with there not being to much speed in here she could very well get a jump on the closers and hold them off like she almost managed last year.
Qushchi (GB): this one would need to make a major jump forward to pull this one off but if anyone can get a horse to do that its Graham Motion. She ran an okay fourth last out in the Flower Bowl it was a good learning experience and she might take enough of a jump forward to hit the board here.

Vionnet: this is another who would need to take a major jump forward to win here but another that I wouldn't be surprised if she managed third or fourth.

Romantica (GB): the only European in here and definitely one to be reckoned with. She ran seventh last out in the grade one Prix Vermeille I think she will jump back from that effort and go back to her winning ways here against this relatively weak field.

7. Designer Legs
8. Ria Antonia
9. Rosalind
10. Scandalous Act
11. She's A Tiger
12. Sweet Reason

*= Denotes a challenge winner

My Conquestadory has first preference in the Juvenile Fillies Turf
Ria Antonia has second preference in the Juvenile Fillies Turf
Rosalind has second preference in the Juvenile Fillies Turf
Dancing House has first preference in the Juvenile Fillies Turf

This years Juvenile filly division is a bit of a mess and anyone of these capable fillies could easily lock up Champion Two-Year-Old Filly honors with a win in here that is if My Conquestadory loses the Juvenile Fillies Turf, or her owners could decide to run her here and if she loses here Champion Two-Year-Old Filly honors would be up for grabs.

The Contenders

Artemis Agrotera: New York bred filly pulled the upset in the Frizette Stakes at Belmont, I like the way she managed to fight off Sweet Reason. She is a perfect two for two and has plenty of upside she's by Roman Ruler out of an A.P. Indy mare and with that breeding she is only going to get better as she gets older and the distances get longer.

Secret Compass: came flying to win the Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita though it did take her awhile to wear down She's A Tiger. This daughter of Discreet Cat has made four starts with two wins and two fourths to show for her efforts. The Chandelier was her first ever start on dirt and she took to it like a fish to water I am little concerned on whether or not she wants to go farther than a mile considering her mother is by Maria's Mon and her father is Discreet Cat this one might be a good sprinter in the future.

Untapable: a perfect two for two this daughter of Tapit has done absolutely nothing wrong and will only get better as she gets older. I love the way she won the Pocahontas Stakes at Churchill Downs in September and the freshening will help her.

Concave: this Ontario bred filly has three starts and two wins to her name and ran credible third in the Del Mar Debutante after winning the Sorrento Stakes, only worry with this one is if she will be fit enough to take this big prize down. She hasn't run since her third in the Del Mar Debutante, she has been working well though getting an average of a work a week and ranging from four furlongs to five furlongs, and if anyone can get a horse ready off a lay-off it's Doug O'Neil.

Designer Legs: this Louisiana bred filly has achieved a lot since her debut at Canterbury Park, she took down the $75,000 Prairie Gold Lassie Stakes at Prairie Meadows then shipped to Saratoga and took down the Adirondack Stakes. She probably didn't handle the slop in the Spinaway and she definitely didn't handle the synthetic in the Alcibaides this one is a live long-shot. She is only going to get better as the distances get longer and don't be surprised if she manages to bring in a win here.

Ria Antonia: four starts and one win for this daughter of Rockport Harbor would need to make a major step forward to win this one. Ran fifth last out in the Frizette though she was making up good ground at the end this one would need to make a 180 degree turn around to win this race.

Rosalind: has made three starts with one win and a third and second to show for it, always seems to come flying late and could very well be another live long-shot in here. the distance will definitely help her and Ken McPeek will make sure is running at 110%.

Scandalous Act: five starts and four wins for this Florida bred. We all know running and training at Calder really helps develop these youngsters and she will be another long-shot that you need to take a long look at. She sports wins in three ungraded state bred stakes, and the switch to a less deep surface like Santa Anita will really move her forward, definitely a long-shot worth a long look and possibly a bet.

She's A Tiger: has danced every dance and has never been worse than second, she is near impossible to pass in the stretch and has the tenacity of a Tiger like her name suggests. Only worry is if she can get the distance.

Sweet Reason: I like this filly a lot she proved that she doesn't need a sloppy track to run well, and will only get better as the distances get longer. I feel last out she hindered her self by breaking horribly and losing a couple lengths at the start she will be very dangerous on Breeders Cup day.

2013 Breeders Cup Distaff Break-down

2013 Breeders Cup Distaff Pre-entries

1. Beholder*
2. Princess Of Slymar*
3. Royal Delta*
4. Authenticity
5. Close Hatches
6. Street Girl

*=Denotes Challenge winner

Street Girl has second preference in the Filly and Mare Sprint

This years Breeders Cup Distaff though small is very mighty and deep in talent, you have two time Distaff champion Royal Delta back for a attempting for a record third Distaff victory. You have arguably one of the best three old fillies we have seen in years in Princess Of Slymar, who has racked up an impressive string of victories this year including the Kentucky Oaks, Alabama, and the Beldame in the latter she bested Royal Delta. Close Hatches is no slouch either with her own grade one victories and also makes a very strong one two punch case for Bill Mott. Then you have the California flash Beholder who if allowed to lead can run you into the ground. Authenticity is the second best older mare in the country and could very well spoil the party here if she gets the right trip. Street Girl winner of the Calder Oaks ran a decent third in the Cotillion to Close Hatches and if she takes the right steps forward she could also spoil the party. I will break them down one by one and give you my top three picks and plays.

The Contenders

Beholder: very impressive win in the Zenyatta Stakes last out in which she beat Authenticity, if allowed to lead she will run this field into the ground. She is a very talented three year old and definietly one to be reckoned with in here.

Princess Of Slymar: Her win in the Beldame was scintillating only worry here is if the race took to much out of her, and if she has enough gas in the take to put in what would have to be a career best race to beat this field. If Princess of Slymar wins here she could potentially clinch Horse of the Year honors, in order for her to get Horse of the Year Game On Dude would have to lose the Classic and Wise Dan would have to lose the Mile.

Royal Delta: back again there were thoughts that she would run in the Classic but the decision has been made to keep her here in against her own sex. Royal Delta will have to avenge Princess Of Slymar after she lost to that one in the Beldame. Royal Delta would have to put in a huge effort here she wont get the lead here as Beholder will be bound and determined to have the lead so she will have to resort to her old tactics of coming from off of it.

Authenticity: is always right there and always tries her hardest, if Royal Delta doesn't fire this one certainly will. Has run a couple of nice second place finishes to Royal Delta and Beholder got a much needed race over the track which will only enhance her chances here.

Close Hatches: though she was no match for Princess Of Slymar in the Kentucky Oaks she certainly has taking major steps forward to capture two straight grade one wins in the Mother Goose and Cotillion Stakes. She may not be a match for Royal Delta but if Royal Delta doesn't fire this one will be right there at the finish.

Street Girl: ran a decent third in the Cotillion and seems to be making forward progress though I think she is biting off more than she may be able to chew here.

2013 Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

6. Celnor (IRE)

12. Ready To Act
13. Ria Atonia
14. Rosalind
15. Sky Painter
16. Street Sailing
17. Vorda (FR)

*= Challenge winner

My Conquestadory has second preference in the Juvenile Fillies
Ria Antonia has first preference in the Juvenile Fillies
Rosalind has first Preference in the Juvenile Fillies
Dancing House has second preference in the Juvenile Fillies

This years Juvenile Fillies Turf is very intriguing with My Conquestadory facing possibly the toughest field she has yet to face, with a host of some very capable Europeans ready to challenge her undefeated record. There are also many capable Americans ready to spoil her party, but if she comes out the winner she could very well clinch champion two year old filly awards. I will break down the field for those that have first preference in this race and will give you my top five picks and plays.

The Contenders

Kitten Kaboodle: won the JP Morgan Chase Jessamine Stakes last out a race that hasn't proven to be a key prep for this race, but I have a feeling this daughter of Kitten's Joy could be the one to buck that trend. I like how she wasn't afraid to go through a hole on the rail and shoot through to win impressively she probably learned a lot from this prep and could use that experience here in what is likely to be a packed field.

My Conquestadory: has done nothing wrong in her two starts she beat the boys in a GR2 stake in her debut and just when you thought she couldn't get any better she made easy work of  a GR1 field of fillies in the Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland. The sky is the limit for this filly and she only seems to be getting better.

Testa Rossi (FR): this filly has made six starts this year the bulk of them in France before being transferred to the barn of the more than capable Chad Brown. She managed to win three races over in France before coming to US soil where she captured the Miss Grillo Stakes which has proven to be a vital prep for this race. I like how she has loads of racing experience to back up on and will be awfully tough to get by in the stretch.

Al Thakhira (GB): a perfect two for two could very well beat My Conquestadory and in my opinion is the most likely to do it, these Europeans are always dangerous and cannot be counted out when it comes to these turf races.

Chriselliam (IRE): this one has made five starts with two wins a second to show for her efforts she has been running primarily in Europe and with moderate success. Would need to take major steps forward to win this one.

Clenor (IRE): this one has made six starts with three wins and a third to show for herself. She has a win over the surface which is a huge advantage in these juvenile races. She ran primarily in Ireland before making three US starts in which she won all three she will be awfully tough come Breeders Cup day.

Colonel Joan: this filly is still a maiden she has run three races with her best finish being a second place finish. She would need a miracle to beat this field of very talented fillies.

Dancing House: won her debut at Saratoga then ran a very good third in the Spinaway Stakes before switching to turf and putting in another good performance to run third in the Miss Grillo Stakes. Could potentially pull out an upset victory if she takes the right steps forward.

Flying Jib (GB): three starts and two wins this European is definitely one to be reckoned with she could very well beat this field and Juddmonte Farms has continually produced Breeders Cup winners, so don't be surprised if this one wears the flowers Breeders Cup day.

Granny Mc's Kitten: ran an okay fourth in the Miss Grillo would need to make good forward progression to even hit the board I much prefer her stablemate in this race, but you shouldn't discount a Kittens Joy this year, so don't be surprised if she does make the progression and run well enough to light up the tote.

Nesso: three starts this year and one win and two seconds to show for her efforts. Needs to take about twelve steps forward to have a chance against this deep a field.

Ready To Act: two starts for this filly and one win and one off the board finish would need to take major steps forward to win this one.

Sky Painter: love this filly though she had trouble getting by Testa Rossi in the Miss Grillo I still liked what I saw she has a very explosive kick that could very well stun her opponents she could very well be blowing by them all on Breeders Cup day.

Street Sailing: four starts and two wins for this daughter of Street Boss would need to take a major step forward to win this one.

Vorda (FR): this one has won four of her five starts and hasn't done anything wrong definietly one to watch she could very well repeat for the French in here and give them their second Juvenile Fillies Turf winner.

Graydar has first preference in the Classic
Laugh Track has second preference in the Sprint

This years Dirt Mile is one of the deeper fields we have seen since the races inception in 2007 win Corinthian dominated the Dirt Mile. The Dirt Mile tends to get horses who are considered the "second Tier" of the top older horses most of these have been running against the best horses in their perspective age group at either sprint distances or classic distances. Today I will break down the Dirt Mile by contenders that have first preference in this race and I will give you my top 5 picks and plays as always.

Centralinteligence: won the Triple Bend Handicap which gave him in automatic berth in here a very talented son of Smarty Jones was Smarty's first US GR1 winner win he wont that race. Last out he ran sixth in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship, I feel that six furlongs is definitely not what this horse wants to run and the one mile distance of the Dirt Mile is just what this horses needs. This one is very dangerous and one you should definitely include on all tickets.

Fed Biz: has run seven races this year and has hit the board in five of those, he's a versatile type that don't think Bob Baffert knows quite what to do with him he's been on dirt turf and synthetic this year been shipped to New York and back. Fed Biz is one who seems to always come knocking ran an okay fifth in the Metropolitan Handicap one of the major preps for this race, he hasn't run since a win the Pat O'Brien Handicap at Del Mar in which he set a track record. He does have past Breeders Cup experience when he ran eighth in last year Dirt Mile in which he lost to Tapizar. He always seems to finish in the top four this year and the freshening Baffert gave him could very well help him.

Alpha: this years Woodward winner opts to run here instead of the Classic I think Kiaran McLaughlin made the right decision on this one, but with only one win this year I wont be including this one on my tickets yes he can be dangerous but he hasn't been able to put back to back races together since last years wins in the Jim Dandy and Travers. Though the addition of blinkers has helped him considerably I feel he is just a step below many in this group this year.

Broadway Empire: this one just started racing this year and what year it has been for this son of Empire Maker. He destroyed the highly regarded Departing in the Oklahoma Derby, he has made six starts this year with four wins and a second to show for it only finishing off the board once this one is always right there. He always is right there at the finish the one off the board finish was at Hollywood Park in the GR3 Affirmed Handicap which I forgive him for because he didn't really handle the synthetic that day. This is one that has the talent and ability to do what Caleb's Posse did in 2011 and be another three year old to take the Dirt Mile.

Brujo De Olleros (BRZ): has three races this year with one win and two seconds to show for it this one could be a nice long-shot play. He has been very consistent this year and could very well pull off an upset is he gets a clear path and nice pace to close into.

Easter Gift: this one has made six starts this year with three wins and two seconds. He is all speed and ran an okay fifth against some of this last out in the Kelso Handicap he wont be getting lose on the lead with other better speed horses in here. I wont be including this one simply because he wont be able to get loose and he seems to need to get loose to win.

Golden Ticket: with seven races and three wins this year Golden Ticket has been running against some of the best older horses in the nation including Fort Larned and Mucho Macho Man (Breeders Cup Classic winner and runner-up from 2012). Goldent Ticket may enjoy the cut back in distance and step down in class being by Speightstown he may love the one mile distance but unfortunately he will be very short priced in here.

Goldencents: one of the most hard knocking three year olds we have seen this year has been on a string of seconditis as of late and can't seem to break through but those second place finishes have been at sprint distances. He is a horse that can beat you from anywhere on the racetrack be it closing from off of it or wheeling away on the lead. This one has run very well at Santa Anita which has proven to be a vital advantage when it comes to these Breeders Cup races. He also has a win at the distance on this track he is one I would not leave out.

Holy Lute: this three year old son of Midnight Lute would need to step up big time to win this one he has four starts in this life with two wins and two thirds, ran third last out in the Indiana Derby would need to take a major step forward to win this one.

Hymn Book: with four starts this year and no wins he has been right there though and hasn't finished off the board but he would also need to take a big step forward to win this one ran a decent third in the Kelso Handicap at Belmont. I would think this one could upset if he gets the right pace in front of him but I favor Brujo De Olleros over him.

Laugh Track: four starts and two wins for this Mark Casse trained colt, he won the Vigil Stakes at Woodbine this year and ran second in the Phoenix Stakes at Keeneland last out needs to prove he can run on dirt.

Pants On Fire: six starts and three wins for this son of Jump Start. He has been right there all year but against some of the lesser horses in this particular division he has managed to win two in a row coming up to this race and I always say a horse on a roll is always dangerous.

Taptowne: nine starts and two wins for this son of Tapit. Would need to take a major step forward to pull this off considering how deep this field is this year he may have bit off more than he can chew in this spot.

Verrazano: when I think of words to describe Verrazano some words that come to mind are brilliant and absolutely difficult to beat at distances shorter than a mile and eighth. He is another very difficult three year old that will definitely be right there at the finish. When he wins he is dominate but the only thing is once a horse looks him in the eye he tends to fold up and quit and with so many top horses in here he might be folding at the top of the stretch when the closers start coming, or he could be opening up and winning by five its give or take with this one but since he is so dominate he is one I can't leave out.

Today I will be breaking down the 2013 Juvenile Turf and giving you my top 5 to play come Breeders Cup day, you may play them however you want in your pick 6's or 4's or 3's or even do a superfecta box if you want as long as you're making money its a good day!

Bobby's Kitten: impressive six and half length winner of the GR3 Pilgrim Stakes last out. Has the highest Timeform US figure last out when he earned a 94, seems like this Ramsey owned son of Kittens Joy might be the real deal. Has two wins from three starts, and just seems to keep stepping forward.

All Cash: this son of English Channel is 0 for 4 with two thirds to show for his career trained by D. Wayne Lukas it doesn't come as a surprise that the coach has chosen to run this one here, and if the coach thinks he is good enough he probably is. Ran a decent 4th last out in the Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland could pull a shocker which the coach has been known to do as of late.

Aotearoa: this two year old gelding is two for three and won the ungraded Zuma Beach Stakes here at Santa Anita Park which is very important in these races track experience is a huge advantage come Breeders Cup day. Only thing is he hasn't faced anything to serious competition and he only barely won the Zuma Beach by three quarters of a length. Really needs to step it up if he is going to even come close to some of the more talented juveniles in this field.

Arpinati (GB): this Juvenile has been mostly running in Italy with three wins from four starts. This one could be dangerous he has been facing graded stakes company in half his starts with a win and a third to show for his efforts, and if I have learned anything about these turf races is you never discount a foreigner.

Bashart: this Todd Pletcher trained speed demon ran a tough second to Poker Player in the off the turf Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland. I have loved this one from day one. Has never been worse than third and will definitely be hanging around at the end fighting his little heart out if allowed to be alone on the lead this one could very well flat out run away.

Bon Accord: has two wins from four starts ran 3rd in the off the turf Bourbon Stakes being by Showing Up this one could get better with age and distance.

Giovanni Boldini: ships from Europe for Adain O' Brien. Adain's shippers are always to be looked out for and this one is no different with two wins from three starts could be a price come Breeders Cup day at around 10-1 maybe lower.

Got Shades: two wins from four starts for this son of Pollard's Vision has two wins in ungraded stakes at Louisiana Downs would need to take a major step forward to win this one.

Home School (IRE): one win from seven career starts has been 0 for 2 since switching to the barn of trainer Doug O'Neil but this trainer knows how to get two year olds ready for major races so don't be surprised if this one lights up the tote board at a nice price.

Ontology: been running mostly against the top dirt two year olds in the country and didn't impress when switched to the turf ran a very nice second in the Oak Tree Juvenile Turf Stakes but switched to dirt again and ran 8th in the Front Runner Stakes. May be biting off more than he can chew here in the Juvenile Turf but being by Tapit watch out for this one in the long run.

Outstrip (GB): This Godolphin color bearer has run four times with two career victories all of his races have been in Europe enters this race off a third place finish in a Weight for age stake at Newmarket obviously a danger in here could very well pull out a victory.

Poker Player: Was very impressive win winning the off the turf Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland broke his maiden at Kentucky Downs if he moves forward and keeps progressing like he has he could very well be a live shot to beat out the talented Euros at a price.

Shamson (IRE): three starts for this European and two victories comes into this race off a fifth place finish in the Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury if he moves forward could very well win and win nicely.

Wilshire Boulevard (IRE): seven starts for this son of Holy Roman Emperor (IRE) he only has two wins to show for it though but in his defense he has been running mostly in stakes company and may welcome a switch to a firmer turf course than what he is used to in Europe.

Breeders Cup Marathon 2013

The 2013 Marathon contenders are as listed:

1. Ever Rider (ARG)*
2. Blueskiesnrainbows (USA)
3. Cease (USA)
4. Commander (USA)
5. Indian Jones (USA)
6. London Bridge (USA)
7. Old Time Hockey (USA)
8. Pool Play (USA)
9. Suns Out Guns Out (USA)
10. Worldly (USA)

*= Challenge winner

The Breeders Cup Marathon began in 2008 at Santa Anita, run at one and one half miles to start with the race has been lengthened to one and three quarter miles. The race has continually produced long-shot winners, it is one of the hardest races to decipher on Breeders Cup day. The races past winners tend to be older horses that have loads of racing experience under their belts. The past winners are as listed:

2008: Muhannak (IRE) 12-1 http://youtu.be/QTsBCuAR5jQ
2009: Man Of Iron  7-1 http://youtu.be/eqTyuAHPcgk
2010:  Eldaafer 10-1 http://youtu.be/LrShZiMUPio
2011: Afleet Again 41-1 http://youtu.be/d-MjcDFNoWc
2012: Calidoscopio (ARG) 17-1 http://youtu.be/xzomYVmMeJs

Now onto this years pre-entered contenders of the 10 nominated only 2 of them have run in the Marathon before those two would be Cease who ran in the 2011 edition and wound up 5th the other would be Commander who ran in the 2012 edition and wound up 9th. This years proposed field is not one of the deeper fields in the Marathon, and as always is puzzling you can make a case for anyone of the horses in the field. Ever Rider is coming up from Argentina is a Breeders Cup Challenge winner and has run the distance before and as we found out last year the Argentinians are dangerous. Blueskiesnrainbows can get very courageous when allowed to have the lead by himself and could very willingly be fighting to the end. Cease is another one who has run the distance before and has had experience in running in the Marathon and doing well which is nothing the others can boast about. Commander enters this race on a bit of a roll having won several ungraded stakes this year only thing is if he can get the distance. Indian Jones ran a strong second in the main prep for the Marathon the Greenwood Cup showed he certainly belongs in this field and could potentially be a huge threat. London Bridge comes over from Europe and the Europeans are dangerous at long distances such as the Marathon but they tend to have trouble over dirt surfaces if London Bridge can handle the dirt he may be a huge threat at a nice price. Old Time Hockey comes into this race 0 for 6 this year he really needs to step it up to win but maybe the switch from turf to dirt is what he need to wake up a little bit he may come in at a price if he handles the dirt. Pool Play the old war horse opts to run here instead of the classic if he gets the distance he could very well be your 2013 Marathon winner. Suns Out Guns Out ran a decent 4th in this years Greenwood Cup Stakes would need to step it up a notch to win this years Marathon but again in a race that continually produces long-shot winners this one would not be a surprise. Worldly is showing good forward progression if he gets this distance he could very well be a nice price winner.

The Top 4

In a race where anyone of the horses has a very solid chance to pull out a victory my top 4 are as follows:

1st Cease
2nd Suns Out Guns Out
3rd Ever Rider
4th Indian Jones

Tune in for my next post about the Juvenile Turf coming soon!
