Derby Six for 12/23/14

1. Texas Red
Afleet Alex- Ramatuelle (CHI) by Jeune Homme
Jockey: Kent Desormeaux
Trainer: Keith Desormeaux
Owner:  Brehm, Erich, Detmar, Wayne, Michaels, Lee, Desormeaux, J. Keith et al.

Derby Points: 12

No Change here still think he is the top threat to the Kentucky Derby at this point. He has the pedigree he has the talent and all he has to do is stay healthy. His turn of foot in the Breeders Cup was unmatched, and if he keeps progressing like he has been he is only going to get better.

2. Carpe Diem
Giant's Causeway- Rebridled Dreams by Unbridled's Song
Jockey: John Velazquez
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Owner: WinStar Farm and Stonestreet Farm

Derby Points: 14

Another that wont be moving positions anytime soon. He has all kinds of ability and one you definitely cannot count out moving forward. He is only going to mature and grow, and be a better racehorse in the future. When he's on the top of his game no horse in this crop will beat him, and he's a very tactical animal that can go anyway which in return makes him incredibly dangerous.

3. Ocean Knight
Curlin- Ocean Goddess by Stormy Atlantic
Jockey: Irad Ortiz Jr.
Trainer: Kiaran McLaughlin
Owner: Stonestreet Stables

Derby Points: 0

Was very impressed with his debut showed everything you like to see with a first time starter. He took dirt and ran through it like it was nothing and with his pedigree he will only get better as the distances get longer. With Curlin on top he's only going to get better with time.

Last Win: Maiden Special Weight at Aqueduct on 12/13/14

4. Mr. Z
Malibu Moon- Stormy Bear by Storm Cat
Jockey: Mike Smith
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Owner: Zayat Stables

Derby Points: 10

Still very impressed with this colt, and I still think we haven't seen his best yet. He is another that will only get better as the distances get longer. If he can settle and make one run he may be very dangerous, but he has also proven he is lethal on the front end as well. He showed a lot of heart last out in the Los Alamitos Futurity, and he is only going to go up from there.

Last Win 6/28 Maiden Special Weight @ Churchill Downs
Last Race: Los Alamitos Futurity

5. Punctuate
Distorted Humor- Pepper's Pride by Desert God
Jockey: Rosie Napravnik
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Owner: Arnold Zetcher

Derby Points: 0

Love the way this colt closed so persistently in his debut; he really made his mama proud too. His mother was a perfect 19 for 19 she was the best New Mexico bred of all time without a question. Her son looks like he's following right in her tracks. With him also being by Distorted Humor he would seem like he would run all day. Baffert also considered running him in the Breeders Cup, but opted to let him aim for next year instead which in the long run will only aide this colt.

Last Win: 9/27 Maiden Special Weight @ Santa Anita Park
Last Race Finish: 1st in 9/27 Maiden Special Weight @ Santa Anita Park

6. Ocho Ocho Ocho
Street Sense- Winner by Horse Chestnut (SAF)
Jockey: Mike Smith
Trainer: James Cassidy
Owner: DP Racing

Derby Points 10

Nothing wrong with an undefeated horse especially one that shows a lot of heart. He is another that will get better with time and with his undefeated record he's obviously got a lot of ability. He is also very versatile and has a very good closing kick which well help him reel in the several speedy colts in this crop.
