*= Challenge winner

The Breeders Cup Marathon began in 2008 at Santa Anita, run at one and one half miles to start with the race has been lengthened to one and three quarter miles. The race has continually produced long-shot winners, it is one of the hardest races to decipher on Breeders Cup day. The races past winners tend to be older horses that have loads of racing experience under their belts. The past winners are as listed:

2008: Muhannak (IRE) 12-1 http://youtu.be/QTsBCuAR5jQ
2009: Man Of Iron  7-1 http://youtu.be/eqTyuAHPcgk
2010:  Eldaafer 10-1 http://youtu.be/LrShZiMUPio
2011: Afleet Again 41-1 http://youtu.be/d-MjcDFNoWc
2012: Calidoscopio (ARG) 17-1 http://youtu.be/xzomYVmMeJs

Now onto this years pre-entered contenders of the 10 nominated only 2 of them have run in the Marathon before those two would be Cease who ran in the 2011 edition and wound up 5th the other would be Commander who ran in the 2012 edition and wound up 9th. This years proposed field is not one of the deeper fields in the Marathon, and as always is puzzling you can make a case for anyone of the horses in the field. Ever Rider is coming up from Argentina is a Breeders Cup Challenge winner and has run the distance before and as we found out last year the Argentinians are dangerous. Blueskiesnrainbows can get very courageous when allowed to have the lead by himself and could very willingly be fighting to the end. Cease is another one who has run the distance before and has had experience in running in the Marathon and doing well which is nothing the others can boast about. Commander enters this race on a bit of a roll having won several ungraded stakes this year only thing is if he can get the distance. Indian Jones ran a strong second in the main prep for the Marathon the Greenwood Cup showed he certainly belongs in this field and could potentially be a huge threat. London Bridge comes over from Europe and the Europeans are dangerous at long distances such as the Marathon but they tend to have trouble over dirt surfaces if London Bridge can handle the dirt he may be a huge threat at a nice price. Old Time Hockey comes into this race 0 for 6 this year he really needs to step it up to win but maybe the switch from turf to dirt is what he need to wake up a little bit he may come in at a price if he handles the dirt. Pool Play the old war horse opts to run here instead of the classic if he gets the distance he could very well be your 2013 Marathon winner. Suns Out Guns Out ran a decent 4th in this years Greenwood Cup Stakes would need to step it up a notch to win this years Marathon but again in a race that continually produces long-shot winners this one would not be a surprise. Worldly is showing good forward progression if he gets this distance he could very well be a nice price winner.

The Top 4

In a race where anyone of the horses has a very solid chance to pull out a victory my top 4 are as follows:

1st Cease
2nd Suns Out Guns Out
3rd Ever Rider
4th Indian Jones

Tune in for my next post about the Juvenile Turf coming soon!

GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY BETTING!

Triple Crown Reactions

I got into horse racing way back in 2004 thanks to a plucky little chestnut horse named Smarty Jones who swept through the Kentucky Derby and Preakness with devastating ease I thought for sure even with my limited horse racing knowledge at that time that he would be racings 12th Triple Crown winner. My hopes were dashed as another plucky little colt named Birdstone swept on by him and dashed all my hopes in that final heartbreaking furlong.  The Triple Crown is part of what fueled my love for this sport at such a young age, and after Smarty Jones I spent most of my life thinking I would never have the privilege to witness a Triple Crown winner. So when American Pharoah came along I relished every hoofbeat, every race-call, and every heart stopping moment along the trail. I probably have watched his Belmont over a hundred times, and I could probably recite it word for word by now. I remember exactly where I was when he crossed that wire first I was hot walking a horse named Castlederg w
