Derby Six for 3/17/18

1.  Bolt D' Oro
Medaglia D'Oro- Globe Trot by AP Indy
Jockey: Javier Castellano
Trainer: Mick Ruis
Owner: Ruis Racing LLC

Career Stats:
Starts: 5
Wins: 4
Seconds: 0
Thirds: 1
Earnings: $816,000

Derby Points: 64

Analysis: He rested all my worries about him not being 100% in the San Felipe. This horse is bred up and down for the Derby distance and with his acceleration and his versatility this is a horse who should handle the Derby with aplomb.

2. McKinzie
Street Sense- Runway Model by Petionville
Jockey: Mike Smith
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Owner: Karl Watson, Mike Pegram, & Paul Weitman

Career Stats:
Starts: 4
Wins: 3
Seconds: 1
Thirds: 0
Earnings: $350,000

Derby Points:40

Analysis: Another who rested my doubts about him in the San Felipe this is one tough hard knocking colt. He does still need to get his stretch antics figured out but that being said he is still a strong force to be reckoned with.

3. Good Magic
Curlin- Glinda The Good by Hard Spun
Jockey: Jose Ortiz
Trainer: Chad Brown
Owner: eFive Racing Thoroughbreds & Stonestreet Stables LLC

Career Stats:
Starts: 4
Wins: 1
Seconds: 2
Thirds: 1
Earnings: $1,255,000

Derby Points:34

Analysis: His Fountain of Youth Stakes was better than looked, he's the type of horse that needs a couple races before he fires his best shot, so as long as he hits the board in the Bluegrass he should be ready to fire his best shot on Derby day.

4. Audible
Into Mischief- Blue Devil Bel by Gilded Time
Jockey: Javier Castellano
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Owner: WinStar Farm LLC, China Horse Club International LTD. & SF Racing LLC

Career Stats:
Starts: 4
Wins: 3
Seconds: 0
Thirds: 1
Earnings: $287,720

Derby Points: 10

Analysis:
His Holy Bull still resonates with me as one of the most impressive performances of any three year old this year. I think he wants to run longer but many are knocking his pedigree and saying he's peaked to soon only time will tell if he's as good as I think he could be.

5. Mendelssohn
Scat Daddy- Leslie's Lady by Tricky Creek
Jockey: Ryan Moore
Trainer: Aidan O' Brien
Owner: Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier & Derrick Smith

Career Stats:
Starts: 6
Wins: 3
Seconds: 1
Thirds: 0
Earnings: $761,137

European Derby Points: 20

Analysis:
He returned with a nice win at Dundalk on the European Road to the Kentucky Derby which is exactly what I wanted to see from him. Sounds like the next step is the UAE Derby which will be a good place for him to try dirt for the first time.

6. Justify
Scat Daddy- Stage Magic by Ghostzapper
Jockey: Mike Smith
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Owner: China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners, Starlight Racing, and Winstar Farm

Career Stats:
Starts: 2
Wins:2
Seconds: 0
Thirds: 0
Earnings: $66,000

Derby Points: 0

Analysis:
This might be the year that the Apollo Curse comes to a riveting end, who better than Bob Baffert to train the horse to do it. Justify has the stride, look, and pedigree of a Derby winner the only reason he's this low is because he has never run in a stake and because there might actually be a reason no horse has won the Derby without starting at two since 1882.

What a Sight to Behold

Photo Courtesy of Horse Racing Nation Beholder has developed into one of the greatest mares of modern times with earnings of $4.4 million dollars, and 15 wins in her remarkable career including 9 grade one stakes victories and 2 Breeders Cup wins. Even more remarkable then her stellar race record is a list of horses she has beaten, and not just beaten, but thoroughly embarrassed most of the time. The list includes millionaires multiple grade one winners, and horses that were undefeated. Here is the amazing list of horses Beholder has conquered there are plenty others, but these are the ones that really stand out. Royal Delta- 2 time Breeders Cup Distaff winner also won the Gr.1 Alabama earned $4.8 million in her remarkable career. Princess of Sylmar- Kentucky Oaks, Alabama, CCA Oaks, Beldame, and earner of just over 2 million dollars in her career. Close Hatches- Mother Goose, Cotillion, Apple Blossom, Ogden Phipps, and Personal Ensign Stakes winner and earner of $2.7 ...

The Beverly D was also her first start on US soil and showed she definitely likes firm going and she will get firm going at Santa Anita which will definitely enhance her chances.  Laughing(IRE): four starts and four wins this year for Laughing, she has racked up a very impressive roster of wins. She took down the grade three Eatont...

Taking a Deeper Look Part Three

Deeper Look Number Three  7. Hoppertunity  Any Given Saturday- Refugee by Unaccounted For  Career Statistics: Starts: 5 Firsts: 2 Seconds: 1 Thirds: 0 Earnings: $610,720  Connections:  Jockey: Mike E. Smith Trainer: Bob Baffert Owner: Watson, Karl, Pegram, Michael E. and Weitman, Paul Derby Points: 95  Class: Some question his class, but I don't have any doubt in my mind about his ability. His race in the Santa Anita Derby was nothing more than a paid workout which is just what he needed. Remember Baffert took a similar approach in 1998 with Real Quiet who also ran into a freaky speed horse named Indian Charlie in the Santa Anita Derby a couple weeks later Real Quiet was a Derby winner and Indian Charlie wasn't. Hoppertunity wasn't asked for much in the stretch run yet he still managed to draw away from Candy Boy and gain ground on California Chrome in a hand ride not to mention he steam rolled past California Chrome in the gallop out. It...
