Derby Six for 3/17/18

1.  Bolt D' Oro
Medaglia D'Oro- Globe Trot by AP Indy
Jockey: Javier Castellano
Trainer: Mick Ruis
Owner: Ruis Racing LLC

Career Stats:
Starts: 5
Wins: 4
Seconds: 0
Thirds: 1
Earnings: $816,000

Derby Points: 64

Analysis: He rested all my worries about him not being 100% in the San Felipe. This horse is bred up and down for the Derby distance and with his acceleration and his versatility this is a horse who should handle the Derby with aplomb.

2. McKinzie
Street Sense- Runway Model by Petionville
Jockey: Mike Smith
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Owner: Karl Watson, Mike Pegram, & Paul Weitman

Career Stats:
Starts: 4
Wins: 3
Seconds: 1
Thirds: 0
Earnings: $350,000

Derby Points:40

Analysis: Another who rested my doubts about him in the San Felipe this is one tough hard knocking colt. He does still need to get his stretch antics figured out but that being said he is still a strong force to be reckoned with.

3. Good Magic
Curlin- Glinda The Good by Hard Spun
Jockey: Jose Ortiz
Trainer: Chad Brown
Owner: eFive Racing Thoroughbreds & Stonestreet Stables LLC

Career Stats:
Starts: 4
Wins: 1
Seconds: 2
Thirds: 1
Earnings: $1,255,000

Derby Points:34

Analysis: His Fountain of Youth Stakes was better than looked, he's the type of horse that needs a couple races before he fires his best shot, so as long as he hits the board in the Bluegrass he should be ready to fire his best shot on Derby day.

4. Audible
Into Mischief- Blue Devil Bel by Gilded Time
Jockey: Javier Castellano
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Owner: WinStar Farm LLC, China Horse Club International LTD. & SF Racing LLC

Career Stats:
Starts: 4
Wins: 3
Seconds: 0
Thirds: 1
Earnings: $287,720

Derby Points: 10

Analysis:
His Holy Bull still resonates with me as one of the most impressive performances of any three year old this year. I think he wants to run longer but many are knocking his pedigree and saying he's peaked to soon only time will tell if he's as good as I think he could be.

5. Mendelssohn
Scat Daddy- Leslie's Lady by Tricky Creek
Jockey: Ryan Moore
Trainer: Aidan O' Brien
Owner: Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier & Derrick Smith

Career Stats:
Starts: 6
Wins: 3
Seconds: 1
Thirds: 0
Earnings: $761,137

European Derby Points: 20

Analysis:
He returned with a nice win at Dundalk on the European Road to the Kentucky Derby which is exactly what I wanted to see from him. Sounds like the next step is the UAE Derby which will be a good place for him to try dirt for the first time.

6. Justify
Scat Daddy- Stage Magic by Ghostzapper
Jockey: Mike Smith
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Owner: China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners, Starlight Racing, and Winstar Farm

Career Stats:
Starts: 2
Wins:2
Seconds: 0
Thirds: 0
Earnings: $66,000

Derby Points: 0

Analysis:
This might be the year that the Apollo Curse comes to a riveting end, who better than Bob Baffert to train the horse to do it. Justify has the stride, look, and pedigree of a Derby winner the only reason he's this low is because he has never run in a stake and because there might actually be a reason no horse has won the Derby without starting at two since 1882.

Triple Crown Reactions

I got into horse racing way back in 2004 thanks to a plucky little chestnut horse named Smarty Jones who swept through the Kentucky Derby and Preakness with devastating ease I thought for sure even with my limited horse racing knowledge at that time that he would be racings 12th Triple Crown winner. My hopes were dashed as another plucky little colt named Birdstone swept on by him and dashed all my hopes in that final heartbreaking furlong.  The Triple Crown is part of what fueled my love for this sport at such a young age, and after Smarty Jones I spent most of my life thinking I would never have the privilege to witness a Triple Crown winner. So when American Pharoah came along I relished every hoofbeat, every race-call, and every heart stopping moment along the trail. I probably have watched his Belmont over a hundred times, and I could probably recite it word for word by now. I remember exactly where I was when he crossed that wire first I was hot walking a horse named Castlederg w
