He ran into a freak last out in Social Inclusion but once again Gulfstream has been favoring speed horses all meet so he had to run against a track bias. He just needed a little reminder race and thats exactly what he got Shug seemed okay with the race so I'm not worried at all. This is one of maybe six horses I've seen so far this year that has the pedigree to get the Derby distance, so as long as he runs well enough to get the points in the Wood Memorial or the Florida Derby I'm keeping him at number one.

His win in the Rebel impressed me enough to move him up to number two his pedigree should get the mile and a quarter and he is certainly a looker and one I've had my eye on for awhile. He's got a beautiful stride to him and he seems to get better every out and with his connections how could you go against him.

His works have been very forward and I'm looking forward to the Santa Anita Derby. He may have to lay closer in the Santa Anita Derby so the speedy Bayern doesn't run away with it. Candy Boy is probably one of the more tatical derby horses on the trail so far this year. The telling decision will be whether or not Gary Stevens choses him or Bayern.

He showed a lot of courage in the Rebel he looks like a lean mean fighting machine and who knows by the way he strides out he may outrun his pedigree. He's a real nice horse and I feel strongly that though his pedigree is weak his heart is strong and sometimes thats all you need.

The more I watch the Tampa Bay Derby the more I like this one he's just a green colt that has a pedigree that will make him run all day, granted he doesn't have the experience some of the others do but he is one talented colt and I'll take him as my Derby dark horse.

He drops to sixth on this list simply because I really don't think he wants any part of a mile and a quarter everyone is all over this horse not realizing his pedigree can hardly get a mile and an eighth let alone a mile and a quarter. He could be a lock for the Preakness though that is seriously the only reason I keep him on here at all. Though he may be brilliant brilliant doesn't always win the Derby you need the heart and the breeding to get the distance and I don't think he has the heart or the pedigree to win the Derby.

Triple Crown Reactions

I got into horse racing way back in 2004 thanks to a plucky little chestnut horse named Smarty Jones who swept through the Kentucky Derby and Preakness with devastating ease I thought for sure even with my limited horse racing knowledge at that time that he would be racings 12th Triple Crown winner. My hopes were dashed as another plucky little colt named Birdstone swept on by him and dashed all my hopes in that final heartbreaking furlong.  The Triple Crown is part of what fueled my love for this sport at such a young age, and after Smarty Jones I spent most of my life thinking I would never have the privilege to witness a Triple Crown winner. So when American Pharoah came along I relished every hoofbeat, every race-call, and every heart stopping moment along the trail. I probably have watched his Belmont over a hundred times, and I could probably recite it word for word by now. I remember exactly where I was when he crossed that wire first I was hot walking a horse named Castlederg w
